Starting a company is a big undertaking, so why make the effort? DestinationFLX started out of frustration while planning our wedding in 2015 (which was held May 2016 at Lamoreaux Landing). I grew up in Rochester, went to college in the Finger Lakes, and moved back in 2015 after 20 years in Atlanta. And I was floored by the variety of wineries, breweries, cideries and distilleries in the region upon return. But I was similarly bewildered trying to find the right ones for an event, tour, or caterer; or how to find service providers like van shuttles, outdoor equipment rental, etc.
An idea took root, and I started @flxregion on Twitter to help other people find cool places to visit, service providers, and things to do. Along the way, I met great artisans making cheese, leading hikes, brewing tremendous beer…and overall, their passion for craft and the Finger Lakes was inspiring. I decided that, while there were several cool sites, wine trail trade associations and other promotional venues, few took a holistic, egalitarian approach to promoting all that makes the Finger Lakes special.
So we built DestinationFLX and this web platform to promote the Finger Lakes region, its services, artisans and wonders – free of charge to those people and places profiled. We also wanted to curate special events that allow people to intimately experience our favorite things in the region. And we launched a van tour to provide more tailored experiences than the “drink ‘til you drop” crawls that are pervasive today. And lastly, we are spending a lot of time in Rochester, bringing the “FLX’ to residents in the economic region’s “government seat.” That took the shape of a shop in Pittsford to promote vendors, and an increasing number of Rochester-based events to showcase the best of the FLX for the city’s nearly one million people.
Our website isn’t perfect, and there will be bumps along the way in the types of events we plan and hold. But there will be no doubting our commitment to promoting the wondrous place that is the Finger lakes region. Visit us often to learn about our favorite things in the Finger Lakes whether you want to get outdoors for a hike, map a tasting tour, or come to a cool event. And join us for one of the many events around the region designed to introduce you to our favorite places, people and things.
