Weis Vineyards

“Just opened” is generally not something you want to hear about a winery since creating quality bottles of the grape goodness takes patience and time. But the folks at Weis Vineyard on Keuka Lake are getting started on a very good foot after opening their tasting room in May of 2017. The winery, founded by head winemaker Hans Peter Weis, features seven new varietals that are all very good.

Peter was born in Zell Mosel, Germany and came to the U.S. for a bit of adventure but fell in love with the Finger Lakes and decided to stay. The “minerality of the soil and climate similar to that of home,” enabled Peter to “pursue his passion of handcrafting traditional German style wines for all to enjoy” right here in the Finger Lakes. We visited their “little red school house” tasting room – it really is a converted old, single-room school house – and sampled the following wines (tasting notes are theirs, the ratings are ours):

  • Dry Riesling (4 out of 5): this wine recently won a Double Gold at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition – delicate stone fruit, such as peach and a vibrant sustained mouthfeel make this wine a delightful treat. Just waiting to be served with oysters, salads or pan-seared scallops.
  • Chardonnay (4 out of 5): aged in a variety of older and newer barrels, this chardonnay has a beautiful balance of body and oak with a fresh acidity on the finish. Beautiful creaminess and a hint of vanilla with a lasting mouthfeel make this chardonnay a standalone indulgence.
  • Semi Dry Riesling (4 out of 5): delightful apricot and peach notes on the nose, with a subtle transition from nectar to honey on the mouthfeel. Nice minerality keeps this wine structured and lively. The hint of sweetness makes this a perfect pairing for lightly spiced foods and desserts.
  • Schulhaus Red (3.5 out of 5): bold black cherry, plum and blackberry nose with a velvety smooth finish and full body make this a perfect every day red. Just asking to be drank alone or paired with your favorite pizza and pasta dishes.

By the way, the folks at the winery are informed, passionate and incredibly welcoming. We look forward to future personal visits and will certainly be adding this to our Keuka Lake van tours.
